How it works

From video to GIF in four steps

  1. Open a video. Drag a video file into vidgif or choose one from your computer.
  2. Trim it. Set the start and end points and watch the preview until it shows exactly the moment you want.
  3. Tune the output. Pick the frame rate, width, quality and speed. The estimated file size updates so you can keep the GIF small enough to share.
  4. Convert and save. Press Convert to GIF, then Save GIF. Need another? Open another video and repeat.

Tips for smaller, better GIFs

Keep it short

GIF has no video compression, so every second adds up. A clip of two to six seconds usually works best.

Lower the width

File size grows quickly with resolution. 480 pixels wide is plenty for chats, docs and social posts.

Use a modest frame rate

10 to 15 frames per second looks smooth for most clips and keeps the file much smaller than 30.

Frequently asked questions

Is vidgif really free?

Yes. There are no accounts, watermarks or conversion limits.

Are my videos uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs on your device, in the browser tab or the desktop app. Your video is never sent to a server. See the Privacy Policy.

Which video formats can I use?

The web app works with the video formats your browser can play, which usually includes MP4 and WebM. Supported formats can vary by browser and device.

Should I use the web app or the desktop app?

The web app needs no install and works on any modern desktop or mobile browser. The desktop apps for Windows, macOS and Linux are available from the GitHub release.

Does it work offline?

After the first visit the web app can be installed and used offline.

Why is my GIF so large?

GIFs are much bigger than video files. Shorten the clip, reduce the width or lower the frame rate. The size estimate shows the effect before you convert.
